Holidays on Sri Lanka

has spent around seven years in total on Sri Lanka and will be returning again for six months in October 2008 until the end of March 2009 to itinerary.
Having traveled around most of the Colombo government controlled part of the island, was impressed with the weather, good, but not great, value of the better hotels - compared with Europe, quality of the food, cleanliness of the stunning white sand beaches, friendliness of the Sri Lankan people and their heritage, plus much more.Based just north of the capital of Sri Lanka Colombo near the costal town of Negombo. Having visited many of the resorts, tourist and cultural areas right across the island.
The Sri Lankan people are generally good natured people, pleased and satisfied with themselves. They smile their way through life and its problems.
The Sri Lankan Government Security Forces are a bit 'twitchy' about photography at the moment (2008) around Government buildings and there are armed uniformed personnel everywhere. This shouldn't detract too much from your pleasure. Just oblige the authority and smile!
Sri Lanka is officially known as the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka is probably best known for the production and export of 'Ceylon' tea, closely followed by coffee, coconuts and rubber. Sri Lanka boasts a progressive and modern agricultural and industrial economy with a self proclaimed 'highest (average) per capita income in South Asia'. The natural scenic beauty of Sri Lanka's tropical forests, beaches and general landscape, as well as Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage and history make it a world's renowned tourist destinations.
Sri Lanka is or has become a popular 'package tour' destination for holidays from Western Europe and the old eastern bloc including Russia. Sri Lanka is a bit 'difficult' for independent travellers at the moment.
Flying time to Sri Lanka from the UK is around 10.5 hours
The national languages of Sri Lanka are Sinhala (or Sinhalese / Singalese) and Tamil, although English is widely spoken and understood in tourist areas.
A visitor visa is not required by full UK passport holding nationals that are staying in Sri Lanka less than 30 days.
The Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR) is the currency.
Sri Lanka time is 5.5 hours ahead of GMT.

JeGraNet.com statement - 15 October 2008 - Quote from the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office website: "There is a high threat from terrorism in Sri Lanka. Fatal attacks have become more frequent. They have occurred in Colombo and throughout Sri Lanka, including places frequented by expatriate and foreign travellers. Further attacks may occur at any time. There is an increasing risk of British nationals being caught up in an attack". As independent travellers we left Colombo after just 9 days into our planned 6 month stay as a result of a feeling of insecurity, however we are sure that 'package tour' travellers to tourist resorts will probably enjoy a worry free holiday.
