Mountains & Peaks
In the central and southern parts of Sri Lanka there are several peaks that are highly ecological and rich in bio diversity. These mountains are preserved as forests and are the starting points of many rivers. The Sri Pada mountain is Sri Lanka's holy peak where people make pilgrims to worship foot print of lord Buddha.
Pidirutalagala Mountain 2534 m
Sri Lanka's highest mountain which is about 8200 feet above sea level, it will take you through some exciting and anxious moments because of it's difficulty in getting to the top, but the climb is worth your effort, because it will take you through some beautiful scenery that one won't forget. One will come across beautiful small waterfalls, because many waterfalls begin from this mountain.
Kirigalpoththa Mountain
Sri Lanka's 2nd highest mountain which is about 2395 metres above sea level. It is accessible via the Hortainplains. The road to Kirigalpoththa is not so clear, therefore it's always recommended to travel there with a tour guide since the foot steps are not so clear.
Totupala Mountain 2359 m
Totupala mountain is the Third highest summit of Sri Lanka. Totupala mountain is about 2357m above sea level. This mountain is situated in the Horton plains as well.
Haputhale Mountain 2351 m
Haputale is a one of the unique places in Sri Lanka. You will be standing on a Mountain top being able to see Landscapes of North, South, West and East.
Adam's Peak "Sri Pada Mountain" 2243 m
The only mountains in the world where four major religions get together and worship. To the Buddhist, the imprint found on the summit of the mountain is the hallowed footprint of the Lord Buddha hence the Name "SriPada". To the Hindus, the footprint is that of God Shiva. To the Christians, it is the footprint of St. Thomas, and to the Islam, it's the foot print of Adam, hence the title "Adam's peak". Another name given by Sinhalese is "Samanala Kanda" meaning Butterfly Mountain due to the fleet of butterflies fling around with the start of the season.
It is 2243m in height above the sea level and about 27km (16 miles) from bottom to the top by foot or 14.4km(9 miles) by vehicle and 12km (7 miles) by foot to the top of the pointed peak.
Namunukula Mountain 2035 m
Situated in Badulla district rising above tea plantations Namukula is one of best mountains in Sri Lanka for an eco adventure. From above you could see the flat plane of eastern forests that include Udawalawe and Yala.
Knuckles Mountain 1515 m
Knuckles is one the most important bio diversity environments with range of mountains and a great water and wild life resource. Loved by travellers for it's beauty Knuckles mountains has become a hot spot in eco tourism in Sri Lanka.
Gongala Mountain
Situated in Rakwana mountain range Gongala is a great place for an eco experince of Sinharaja. From west side you can see the Sinharaja Rain Forest Mountains and Canopy. The Nothern and Eastern side will show you Rakwana and Balangoda as well as Udawalawe forest in the distance. The Southside view if most spectacular ranging the views to matara the sea town of south. The Drive to the mountain to is breathtaking.
Hunnasgiriya Mountain
A fascinating mountain of Knuckles Range is climbers paradise with it's ecology, water streams and surrounding scenes.
Hantana Mountains
Famous among local climbers hantana can be seen from Kandy dressed in mist. A great place to go when you are in Kandy.
Sigiriya
Sigiriya is a giant rock peak where King Kashayapa build his citadel and now a world heritage and declared as worlds eighth wonder. Sigiriya frescos and Ancient architectural master pieces of Sri Lankans are the main attractions in Sigiriya.
Mihintale
This sacred mountain peak was where Arahat Mahinda Thro met King Devanapiyatiss which change the History of Sri Lanka to establish Buddhism.
Batalegala Mountain (Bible Rock)
Named as Bible Rock by Europeans this fascinating mountain is seen from Kadugannwa pass on the Kandy Colombo Road. Situated in Aranayaka ecologically important area in central hills.
Yapahuwa
The Yapahuwa rock and its surrounding area became the capital of the island for a short time in the 13th century. It is known that King Buvanaikabahu 1 (1273-1284) made this rock, rising loftily out of the outskirts of Kurunegala his capital.
Ritigala
Ritigala is a Strict Nature Reserve, which lies on a hill 766m High. It is a striking feature in the flat, dry landscape surrounding it.A mountain steeped in legend, history, mystery, mist crowned with cool & wet micro-climate. We are in between Anurdhapura & Polonnaruwa. We are at an archaeological site.
Pink Quartz Mountain
The quartz deposit spreading over 105 hectares is the largest in South Asia and is estimated to be 550 million-years-old. The stones belong to a superior stone category and according to research, the mineral known as silicon dioxide is the main component of the pink quartz. Another archaeological investigation revealed it to contain 250 million-years-old plant fossils.
