Tourism Cluster
The Tourism Cluster was formed in conjunction with key tourism industry associations in April 2000 with the assistance of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded The Competitiveness Initiative (TCI). The Cluster was initiated to devise a unified, industry-wide strategy to enhance the competitiveness of the Sri Lanka tourism industry. A broad range of industry stakeholders participated in the Cluster’s strategy work and initiative development including the Sri Lanka Tourist Board, Universities, Academic experts, community groups, regional tourism associations, and several public sector agencies.

Tourism Cluster Research Committee (TCRC)

As part of the Tourism Cluster, the sub committee, TCRC was formed in June 2006 comprising of members from both industry and the government. The objective of setting up this committee was to assess information needs of the industry and explore possibilities of developing systems to improve the information availability to both private and public sectors for strategic decision making. With that in mind, this site and the database was developed through a consultative process for the use of all stakeholders of the Industry to meet their requirements making this “the hub of tourist information “ in Sri Lanka.

Members of the TCRC Subcommittee are:

* Private Sector: Association of Guest Houses & Small Hotel owners of Sri Lanka , Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators (SLAITO), Tourist Hotel Association of Sri Lanka (THASL), Alpha Orient Lanka, Sri Lankan Airlines

* Public Sector : Ministry of Tourism, Department of Immigration & Emigration, the University of Colombo - Department of Statistics

* Other: The Competitiveness Program (TCP)

Tourism Cluster Research Database (TCRD)

The TCRD website is the first step in gathering data directly from the industry.

TCRD is a web-based information system capable of generating web -viewable, printable, and MS Excel-compatible industry reports and company- specific performance reports. . The database has on-line data entry features that can be used by hoteliers, in-bound tour operators and other key stakeholders to input data.

Authenticated users of the online database will be provided access to TRD website using a secure login for data entry and to generate industry related reports in a timely manner. The reports will be of two specific categories: (a) Company specific performance reports (b) Industry summary reports (only on companies who have fed in data to the TCRD). The aggregated industry reports will be accessible only to companies that contribute/share their individual data in the database. An individual company can only access their own confidential performance reports.

This website can also be used as a training tool to assist smaller companies in collecting and building accounting databases to measure their performance and understand changes in the tourism Industry.
